What Makes MLS Different?

Martin Luther School students and teachers in Joplin Missouri

At Martin Luther School, faith is not an add-on — it is the foundation of everything we do. Our students pray together, study Scripture, and learn to see the world through the lens of God’s love. But we are also a school that takes academics seriously. Our teachers use NWEA MAP Growth assessments, Power Hours for targeted reading and math instruction, and hands-on learning that challenges every student at their level.

Families of all backgrounds and church traditions are welcome here. You do not need to be Lutheran to enroll. Many of our families come from different faith backgrounds or are just beginning to explore their faith. What unites us is a shared commitment to raising children of strong character in a loving, Christ-centered community. As we often say, “We’re not here to make little Lutherans — we are here to encourage little Christians.”

Our Five Core Values

Our Strategic Plan 2025–2029 is built around five core values that guide everything we do:

  • Compassionate Leaders — We teach students to lead with empathy and serve others.
  • Christ-Centered Servants — Faith drives our service to the school, church, and community.
  • Innovative Thinkers — We encourage creative problem-solving and curiosity in every subject.
  • Resilient Learners — We help students develop grit, perseverance, and a growth mindset.
  • God’s Unique Creations — Every child is valued and celebrated for who God made them to be.

Supported by a Caring Congregation

Martin Luther School is owned and operated by Immanuel Lutheran Church, a congregation of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod that has been serving the Joplin community since 1897. Our congregation is deeply committed to the school — providing approximately 40% of the tuition value for every student enrolled.
