Our History
Serving Joplin families since 1953
Martin Luther School history Joplin spans more than 70 years as a cornerstone of Christ-centered education. Our story is one of faith, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the children and families we serve — from our founding in 1953 to rebuilding after the 2011 tornado.

“We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.”
Psalm 78:4 (ESV)
Our Namesake: Martin Luther

Martin Luther School is named after Martin Luther (1483–1546), the German pastor and professor whose bold stand for biblical truth launched the Protestant Reformation. Often confused with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — who was actually named after the Reformer — Martin Luther believed that every person should have access to the Word of God and a strong education. He championed the founding of schools so that children could learn to read the Bible and grow in faith and knowledge. That same conviction drives our school today: a Christ-centered education rooted in Scripture, built on grace, and dedicated to helping every child discover their God-given potential.
Founded in Faith: 1953
Martin Luther School was established in 1953 by the congregation of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Joplin, Missouri. The founding families shared a vision for a school where children could receive an excellent academic education rooted in the Christian faith. From day one, Martin Luther School has been affiliated with the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), part of a nationwide network of more than 1,800 Lutheran schools committed to academic excellence and spiritual formation.
Our first teacher, the beloved Miss Estella Fritz, established Joplin’s very first kindergarten program right here at Martin Luther School — a legacy of educational excellence that has continued for over 70 years and counting.
Tested by the Storm: May 22, 2011

On May 22, 2011, an EF5 tornado — one of the deadliest in American history — struck Joplin, Missouri. The tornado devastated our community, and Martin Luther School’s property was significantly damaged. But in the aftermath, something remarkable happened: our school and church immediately became a relief center where neighbors, families, and community members could receive help throughout that summer.
The Martin Luther School community rallied together with a determination that reflected the faith at our core. Families, congregation members, alumni, fellow LCMS schools and churches across the country, and complete strangers came together to support our mission. God’s faithfulness was unmistakable in every act of generosity we received.
Rebuilt and Stronger: 2013
In 2013, Martin Luther School’s buildings were refurbished with new construction safe rooms engineered to protect students and staff. Our updated campus features modern classroom technology, flexible learning spaces designed for collaboration and creativity, and two purpose-built Early Childhood classrooms with heated floors and a backup generator — some of the safest rooms in Joplin for our youngest students.
The refurbishment was more than a construction project — it was a testament to our community’s faith and resilience. We came through the storm stronger and more prepared than ever to serve Joplin families for generations to come.
