About Martin Luther School
Joplin’s Christ-centered Lutheran school since 1953
Martin Luther School is the Lutheran school Joplin families trust — serving children in preschool through 8th grade since 1953. As a mission ministry of Immanuel Lutheran Church (LCMS), we kindle character, spark joy, and ignite curiosity in every child through the light of Christ.
Our Mission
Founded in 1953, Martin Luther School kindles character, sparks joy, and ignites curiosity in every child through the light of Christ — serving early childhood through eighth grade.
Our Vision
We nurture a community of life-long learners who thrive as unique children of God — fanning into flame a passion for Christ that impacts their school, family, and community through faith, knowledge, character, and resilience.

“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”
2 Timothy 1:6 (ESV)
Our History

Martin Luther School was founded in 1953 as a ministry of Immanuel Lutheran Church to serve families in the Joplin area with Christ-centered education. Our first teacher, the beloved Miss Estella Fritz, established Joplin’s very first kindergarten program right here at MLS — a legacy of educational excellence that has continued for over 70 years.
Today, MLS is fully accredited through National Lutheran School Accreditation (NLSA) — earning 8 strengths and 1 Powerful Practice distinction in our most recent review. Our Power Hour extended learning block is recognized as a model program among LCMS schools nationwide.
Our Five Core Values
Compassionate Leaders
We develop students who serve others with empathy and humility, leading by example in their families, schools, and communities.
Christ-Centered Servants
Faith is not a subject at MLS — it is the foundation of everything. Weekly chapel, daily prayer, and Lutheran values woven into every classroom moment.
Innovative Thinkers
From robotics to STEM enrichment, we challenge students to think creatively and solve real problems with curiosity and confidence. See our full programs list.
Resilient Learners
Through Power Hour extended learning, NWEA MAP Growth testing, and individualized support, every student grows at their own pace with teachers who know them by name.
God’s Unique Creations
Every child is made in God’s image — full of gifts, worth, and potential. Small class sizes at MLS mean teachers know every student by name and by story. Our student-teacher ratio of 8:1 ensures no child gets lost.
All Families Welcome
While we are rooted in the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod tradition, families from all denominations and backgrounds are welcome at MLS. As our leadership says: “We are not here to make little Lutherans — we are here to encourage little Christians.”
Immanuel Lutheran Church covers approximately 40% of tuition to make quality Christian education affordable for every family.
Our Leadership
Martin Luther School is led by Principal Mollie Ramstad, Pastor Christopher Ramstad (School Shepherd), and DCE Jason Glaskey — together forming the Ministry Leadership Team for Immanuel Lutheran Church and Martin Luther School.
