Upper Grades (5–8)
Strong academics. Christ-centered character. Real leadership.
Martin Luther School’s middle school Joplin MO program is where strong academics, Christ-centered character, and real leadership come together. Beginning in 5th grade, students enter our departmentalized Upper Grades model — subject-specific teachers, rotating quarterly electives, and increasing independence — while still belonging to our close-knit school community. By the time they graduate after 8th grade, our students are academically prepared, spiritually grounded, and ready to lead.

Departmentalized Instruction — Ready for High School
Our Upper Grades students follow a departmentalized schedule that mirrors the structure they will experience in high school. Students in grades 5 through 8 move between subject-specific teachers for in-depth instruction in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and religion. This model builds the time management, focus, and study habits that set MLS graduates apart when they move on to high school. Students ready for advanced work can progress into pre-algebra and algebra, giving them a genuine academic head start.
Power Hour — Personalized Instruction Every Day
Every Upper Grade student is assessed three times per year with NWEA MAP Growth testing in reading, math, and language arts. This data, combined with daily teacher observation, drives our innovative Power Hour program — dedicated time each day where students are grouped by skill level for targeted math and reading instruction. Whether your child needs reinforcement or is ready to push further, Power Hour ensures the right challenge every single day.
Electives and Enrichment
Upper Grades students choose from rotating quarterly electives taught by teachers and skilled community members with specialized interests. Past offerings have included art, technology, fitness, and more — giving students a taste of the variety and choice they will encounter in high school while helping them discover new gifts and passions. Students also participate in choir, handbells, and the annual spring musical, along with competitions including Academic Fair, Geography Bee, and Bible Bee.
Faith and Leadership
Upper Grades students grow in their faith through daily religious instruction, weekly chapel services, and opportunities to serve as chapel leaders and Student Council members. Our pastoral staff and DCE work closely with students through youth group, mentorship, and service learning opportunities documented in The Glow, our weekly school publication. Students are empowered to be witnesses for Jesus and servant-leaders in their school, church, and community.
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:6 (ESV)
