What Does “Lutheran” Mean? Will My Family Fit In?
Great question — and one we hear often! Lutheran Christians are Bible-believing Protestants who follow the teachings of the Reformation. Think of us as a Christ-centered, Bible-focused church family. We believe that salvation is a free gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ, and that the Bible is God’s true and trustworthy Word. Our worship, teaching, and daily school life are built on those simple foundations. Families from every church background — and families with no church background at all — are welcome at Martin Luther School. You will find a warm and loving community here.
Who Was Martin Luther? Is Your School Named After Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?
Our school is named after Martin Luther (1483–1546), a German pastor, professor, and theologian who sparked the Protestant Reformation. He believed that every person should be able to read the Bible for themselves, and he championed the idea that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone — not through human effort. His passion for education led to the founding of schools across Europe, and that same commitment to faith and learning is at the heart of our school today. While Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was actually named after this same Reformer, they are two different historical figures. We are proud to carry on the Reformer’s legacy of Christ-centered education right here in Joplin.
Do Students Need to Be Lutheran to Attend?
Absolutely not! Martin Luther School welcomes students and families of all faith backgrounds. While we are proudly affiliated with the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), we serve families from many different churches and traditions across the Joplin area. All families are welcome to experience our Christ-centered community.

Yes! Our Summer Enrichment Program keeps kids learning, active, and engaged during the summer months. It is open to both MLS students and children from the wider Joplin community. It is a great way for new families to experience Martin Luther School before the school year begins.
