Where curiosity is ignited, confidence is built, and a love for learning takes root.

Martin Luther School’s elementary school Joplin MO program provides a strong academic foundation rooted in the love of Christ. In grades 1 through 4, students build essential skills in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies while growing in their faith and character. Our classrooms are where curiosity is ignited, confidence is built, and a love for learning takes root.

Personalized Learning with Power Hour

One of the hallmarks of our elementary program is the innovative Power Hour model. Every day, students participate in dedicated Math Power Hour and Reading Power Hour blocks where they are grouped by skill level based on NWEA MAP Growth data and teacher assessment. This means your child receives targeted instruction at exactly the right level — whether they need reinforcement or are ready for more advanced material. It is the kind of personalized attention that sets a private Christian school apart.

Christ-Centered Every Day

Faith is woven into every subject and every interaction at Martin Luther School. Elementary students receive daily religious instruction including Bible history, doctrine, and Scripture memory work. Weekly chapel services bring the school community together for worship, and students learn to connect God’s Word to their daily lives. Our curriculum is aligned with the Concordia Curriculum Guide, ensuring that Lutheran faith integration is thoughtful, intentional, and age-appropriate at every grade level.

“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.'”

Matthew 19:14 (ESV)

A Well-Rounded Experience

Elementary students at Martin Luther School enjoy a rich variety of learning experiences beyond core academics. Music instruction includes singing, choir, and handbells. Art classes develop creativity and self-expression. Physical education builds fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Students participate in field trips, science explorations, and our beloved annual spring musical. The Friendzy social-emotional learning curriculum and 7 Mindsets program help students develop character, kindness, and strong peer relationships.

Technology and Resources

Our elementary classrooms are equipped with SMART boards and age-appropriate technology. Students use Google Classroom and 1:1 devices when appropriate, with Go Guardian internet safety monitoring. A resource teacher provides additional support for students who need it, ensuring that every child can succeed at their own pace.

With average class sizes of 12 to 15 students, our elementary teachers build deep relationships with every child and family. After school care is available for working families, and our hot lunch program serves nutritious meals daily. Martin Luther School’s elementary program gives your child the academic skills, Christian character, and confident spirit they need to thrive.

Faith, Community, and Service

Our elementary program also includes service learning through The Glow, our weekly school publication that connects students to their community. Students participate in school-wide events like the Christmas program, Lenten chapel services, the spring musical, and field day — building lasting friendships and helping children see themselves as part of something bigger: a school family rooted in Christ’s love.

Preparing for the Upper Grades

After 4th grade, students transition into our Upper Grades program (grades 5–8), where they experience departmentalized instruction, rotating electives, and the increasing independence of middle school — all within the same caring, Christ-centered community they have known since their first day at Martin Luther School. This seamless transition is one of the biggest advantages of choosing a preschool-through-8th-grade school for your family.

Our elementary students are well-prepared to transition into our middle school program (grades 5–8), where they will experience departmentalized instruction and expanded leadership opportunities. If your child is younger, explore our Early Childhood program and kindergarten. Learn more about our Faith & Values or our NLSA accreditation. Ready to learn more?
